Exemplification Essay: Separation of Church and State -- Expository Ex

Because of my solid convictions, I have been known as the Antichrist, a witch, a nonbeliever, and a Satanist. Intense Christians have revealed to me that my â€Å"kind† is exclusively answerable for the ruin of American ethics.  In reality, none of these marks fits me. I am not a witch on the grounds that the main present day religion to rehearse black magic is Wicca (American Heritage 1381), and I am not a Wiccan. I am not a Satanist since current Satanists don't have faith in Satan as a genuine substance; rather, they follow a religion of oneself, as the author of the Church of Satan, Anton LaVey, put it. (LaVey 1) Satanists likewise have a place with an association, for example, the Church of Satan or the Temple of Set, and I don't have a place with any such association. I don't consider myself a skeptic since nonbelievers tend to not have all around created moral frameworks. I am a mainstream humanist. This implies I have no confidence in heavenly creatures or powers (divine beings or goddesses, holy messengers, evil presences, leprechauns, and so on.); that reasonable idea is more imperative to me than daze confidence; and that I esteem opportunity of articulation, conviction, and request.  Presently, in light of the fact that I esteem opportunity of conviction, it doesn't trouble me that individuals contemplate me. In the event that they need to accept that I fly through the air on a broomstick to a Satan-revering blow out, that is their misconception. On the off chance that they need to think my life is more energizing than it truly is, they're welcome. What pesters me is the way that strict extremism stretches out to the most significant levels of government. George Bush was cited as saying, I don't realize that skeptics ought to be considered as residents, nor should they be viewed as nationalists. This is one country under God. (Quotes 5) The issue is that the main change expresses that C... ... of the lion's share, the minority suffers mistreatment. The nature of government endures when it has been blended a lot in with religion, and the nature of strict intentions endure when they have been dirtied by political thought processes.  We should move to a genuine partition of chapel and state.  Works Cited American Heritage Dictionary, second. Toulmin Argumentation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Toulmin Argumentation - Essay Example The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is a case of the means that the administration has made so as to expand the workforce in the military. It is a demonstration requiring all state funded teachers to be profoundly qualified by method of indicating subject information for their showing level (Berkhart 104). While this demonstration is by all accounts an exceptionally objective and an all around organized arrangement, the news with respect to the quantity of understudies who are breezing through the military tests are disturbing. As indicated by Fox News, one in each four understudies who took the fundamental military test †which is essential math, science and perusing questions †has gotten a bombing mark. It is therefore that the military ought to be permitted, and hence, increase their endeavors of attempting to enlist secondary schools in military. Likewise, Amy Wilkins, the VP of the charitable Education Trust, such episode just allows us to investigate the regular citiz en workforce. The aftereffect of the test possibly shows that in the event that the understudies were not prepared for the military occupations, at that point they are in all probability not additionally prepared for the work in the regular citizen network. In light of present conditions, the military should be frightened most particularly if the decisions they have are gradually decreasing by the number. With the worry of the student’s government assistance, in any case, some are stating that the military has gotten increasingly brutal in pushing the understudies to apply for the Army. While then again, some are stating that the military are just there, allowing them the chance to manage them on what way to take. There are still a few schools that are extremely proficient with regards to the territory of enrollment (Trousdale 42). It can likewise be expressed that the motivation behind why a few understudies feel that they are being pushed by the military is on the grounds t hat they are not yet truly prepared to be of administration to the Army. Being in secondary school, they despite everything need to encounter the opportunity, and be joyful in anything they do. Also, to most understudies, being in the military resembles detaining yourself to so much train that the best way to turn out to be free again is to stopped. In any case, on the other hand, as what Amy Wilkins has expressed, if secondary school understudies are not yet prepared for the difficulties that the military is offering, at that point they are not by any means progressively prepared for the difficulties in reality. Enlisting is a piece of each association. Obviously, so as to keep up various individuals, enlistment is the key. What's more, for this situation, military fills in as the national safeguard of the network. They are the ones who will battle for the country’s wellbeing, and therefore, their numbers ought to be fixed, not to mention be expanded. What's more, not just t hat, the Army actually needs a workforce that is taught and persuaded so they can protect the nation genuine well. Enlisting isn't tied in with compelling these children to go into war, but instead, opening their brains to the conceivable profession opportunity in the military world. Truth be told, getting into military may be the most ideal approach to get them an advanced degree. Another profit by selecting is that they execute inspiration for the understudies to endeavor and buckle down. They likewise urge them to be taught by recounting to their own accounts. By this, anybody can unmistakably observe that the understudies are not being compelled to join the military however is just encouraging the chance of them joining the Army. All things considered, all willingly and children these days are savvy enough to recognize what they truly need in their life. It is never off-base to

On Flying

On Flying I fly a lot. Fact: aside from April and July, I’ve flown every month so far in 2009. Fact 2: in the four short semesters after enrolling at MIT, my frequent flier account has already broken six figures in terms of lifetime miles. Fact 3: I’ve been in an awful lot of airports. From Fact 3, I can tell you that SFO has pretty great food, IAD has a super cool “Mobile Lounge” vehicle-thingy that transports you from one terminal to another, NRT has the cleanest toilets you can possibly imagine, AMS has 10 euro sandwiches (that are quite bland but are rather cute, from the impeccable European way that the lettuce, tomatoes, and ham are arranged between the triangular whole-wheat bread), and LAX has relatively uncomfortable couches on which to spend the night (ps. MAD doesn’t fare much better â€" although their Starbucks has really soft sofas â€" you just may have to move when the cleaning staff comes over). Naturally, I’ve also been on many airlines and seen how air travel functions in several countries. It strikes me, then, how remarkably inefficient US domestic travel can be (of course, I’m not generalizing across airlines â€" some carriers are far better than others). I want to relate my particular adventure just two days prior, when I flew back from San Francisco to Boston for just a day (on a free ticket though â€" redeemed through my miles). I had to go back to Boston to take a qualifying examination (unrelated to MIT) â€" the alternative was to come back early from Taiwan to do it next weekend, but of course I didn’t want to sacrifice a single hour in Taiwan, so I decided to do it last weekend. Thus began the journey in which I was on the air longer than I actually was physically in Boston. I have omitted the name of the carrier, but you should be able to figure it out easily enough. My flight was the red-eye out of SFO on Friday night at 10:20 PM, and accordingly I scheduled myself to arrive at 9:00 at the airport â€" an hour and 20 minutes for a domestic flight â€" not bad, right? Well, it turns out that there is a line. A LONG line. Just to get to the Self Check-In counters. Sighing, I resigned myself to waiting in line to use one of those machines, helping lost Taiwanese tourists navigating through to Paper Ticket Check-In. Finally, I was at the head of the line. Time check. 9:20 PM. I had an hour left. I proceeded to one of those “Self Check-In Counters” that my particular carrier is extremely fond of, hoping against all odds that perhaps it will actually work this time (I am able to count on one hand the number of times the self check-in has actually worked for me with this particular airline. I don’t think the problem is the self check-in machine or my passport, as I have never had problems with other airlines). Expectedly, the dreaded “blue screen of death” came on â€" “Please see a customer representative for assistance.” To be honest, I’m never sure what the point of having these counters are if one is never able to obtain one’s boarding pass through these machines correctly. Well, customer representative â€" not so bad, right? Wrong. The thing with this carrier is that it is nearly always understaffed in domestic terminals. This particular night, there’s two harried customer representatives overseeing 15 self check-in machines, and one representative looks like he’s ready to murder a group of Korean grandparents that he happens to be helping with checking in. If there’s anything I learned from working in Oakland Chinatown this year, it’s that at certain times, you’ll have to make yourself heard (and seen) or you’ll never get service at all. I managed to get closer to one of the customer representatives (the less murderous one), only to have the rep call out to the entire lobby in an exasperated voice that all passengers having trouble with the self check-in should proceed to the Paper Ticket Check-In line. As if on cue, the mass of travelers and baggage carts began moving towards the other line. Time check. 9:35 PM. Fortunately, I was able to get into the other line before the mass of tourists reached it, falling a few heads behind the Taiwanese tourists, who were winking at me. I counted that there were probably 20 people ahead of me in this line, and if I had any luck at all I might be able to clear this line by 9:50 PM, hopefully leaving half an hour to go through security and board. Quickly, however, I discovered that this second line was not really a “line” at all, but more precisely, a “waiting area.” Various other customer representatives, plagued by customer complaints, were pulling many passengers to the front of the line to the customer representatives at the counter, asking the representative at the counter to check them in ASAP, as they didn’t speak English/they have a lot of baggage/they have a lot of people…etc. At this point, I had precisely 5 people ahead of me to the front of the line, but the line didn’t move for 10 minutes due to these random people popping out of nowhere. Finally, the lady who was at the front of the line cleared her throat loudly. ”Excuse me.” she gestured at a customer rep, ”we’ve all been waiting here for awhile now. We have flights that are leaving in less than an hour too!!”. Everyone looked up, and the reps who were previously pulling people out of the line started converging at the front of the line and beginning to organize a way of systematically getting people to the counter. I was okay, since I’ve started chatting with a lady in front of me who’s also been through this before and is pretty annoyed at the airline too. (“The only reason why I still fly with them is that I have far too many mileage points and it’s too bothersome to switch carriers now,” she told me, “I already stopped bothering with the self check-in and I come directly to the counter now. Better just wait in line than use those damned machines and realizing that you have to wait in line anyway.”) After what seemed to be like ages, a kind gentleman at the desk finally motioned to me over. It felt akin to a deserted lifeboat floating in the ocean, finally seeing the bright rockets sent up by the rescue ship. Time check. 10:00 PM. It turns out that it is already too late to check bags (45 minute cut-off, absolute latest 30 minutes prior), but it’s okay since I anticipated this kind of delay happening and so I just had a small carry-on (I didn’t need clothes anyway, since I wasn’t going to spend the night in Boston). He had to make a phone call over to the gate, since they’ve started boarding already notifying them to wait for me. He handed over the boarding pass and told me to get through Security quickly so I don’t miss my flight. Time check. 10:03 PM. The actual check-in procedure took 3 minutes. Waiting for a rep took an hour. I made it past security, hoping all the while that I don’t get “selected” by the TSA for a spot check, because that means I will really miss the flight and end up spending the night at the airport (remember LAX? This airline has already done it to me in the past when they overbooked the red-eye and actually blatantly gave my confirmed seat away to someone else on the waiting list due to an “administrative oversight.” They gave me $100 in compensation (redeemable gift certificate), but I ended up spending another 8 hours in the airport). I clutched the laptop that I took out for the Security Check and ran all the way to the gate, arriving out of breath, but relieved that the gate hasn’t closed yet. The kind guy at the gate told me that they were about to page me over the intercom, and that I had arrived right on time for the gate to close. “Welcome aboard,” he winked at me, “arrive at the airport earlier next time.” I arrived at Boston at 7:30 AM, went back to MIT to drop off all the MCAT books that I accumulated this summer (that I was going to ship back originally), went and took the test, returned to MIT to say goodbye to a friend, and then headed back to Logan at 2:30 PM for my 4:30 PM flight. Learning from my mistakes, I remember not to use those “damned machines” anymore and headed straight to the counter. I was checked in by 2:35 PM. I was also informed that they couldn’t give me the boarding pass for the IAD to SFO leg (I had a layover at Washington Dulles on the way back) â€" they didn’t tell me why â€" but I should go see customer service there for my boarding pass. I already had a vision of the frantic customer service desk what will be awaiting me at Dulles. I was not wrong. I ended up waiting for 35 minutes in the terminal help desk to collect my boarding pass back to SFO. What I don’t understand is why an airline that flies hundreds of flights each day can be so remarkably inefficient when it comes to ticketing and checking-in. I had confirmed seats on all three legs of this trip, complete with seat number and all â€" I didn’t have to check any bags either â€" and still always had to go to customer service to get help. I was clearly not alone, as there is always an army of passengers near the counter as well. Am I some sketchy person that the airline had told those automated machines not to recognize? And it’s not just the machines either â€" the efficiency with these customer service counters is abysmally-crazy. I’m young, understand English, capable of carrying my own bags and standing in line for extended amounts of time, but what about your other customers who can’t afford to stand and wait so long? Learn from Singapore Airline, guys. (or maybe you just have to fly Business to get decent service) -written during the layover at Tokyo Narita, about to board my 17th flight so far this year. tidbits about flying 1. I don’t mind airplane food at all (my high school cafeteria food tastes worse). In fact, I’ve sometimes had more than one portion when traveling with friends who didn’t want to eat. On a very rare occasion, the aforementioned airline bumped me at no charge to Business class, where I had steak. STEAK!! It’s amazing how Economy food gets worse and worse and Business/First food gets ridiculously awesome. 2. I like window seats (especially on the right side) for flights under 6 hours, since I can usually nap the whole way against the window. I like aisle seats for trans-Pacific flights, since I won’t feel bad about disturbing other people to get to the bathroom. 3. At first I never understood why people prefer to board early. For me, getting on the airplane early just means having to sit on the airplane longer on an already long flight. Recently, I finally realized the reason why if you dont get it early, there will be no more overhead compartment space left. 4. People who have humongous roller carry-on trunks in order to save money should dieeee X( 5. Many Asian airlines have instant noodles that are manufactured by the airline, which you can’t buy outside of the airplane. Ask for it on long flights! The JAL one, for example, tastes awesome. 6. I rarely watch movies on long flights. Instead, I just don’t sleep much the night before (well, I don’t try to, but I usually sleep 4 hours before the flight because of natural procrastination =p). Thus, I usually just pass out and wake up only for meals. It makes the long flight go by faster, anyway. 7. I once had 8 cans of apple juice flying from San Francisco to Taipei. (I just had 5 flying from SFO to Narita). Haha, hey, I 3 apple juice and they’re free on the airplane! 8. The absolute best memory of airplane food is flying from Taipei to Manila during my junior year in high school on a mission trip. We were flying China Airlines and we actually had lu rou fan!. Lu rou fan is a traditional Taiwanese snack/light meal that consists of pork stewed with soy sauce, rice wine, and spices over rice. The kicker is that the airplane food actually came with a braised egg as well (lu dan â€" you usually put it in along with the pork during the cooking process as it makes the cooked egg afterwards a delightful treat, having absorbed all the flavor of the condiments and the meat). 9. I’ve met many people on flights or just in airports, waiting during a layover. One of the most interesting individuals I’ve met was a manager at a big telecommunications company, whose job is to fly from city to city (mainly domestic, but also international) to assess the productivity and efficiency of the company branch in that particular city and to also troubleshoot problems on behalf of the main office. He told me that last year, he spent over 300 days away from home, and visited over 100 cities in 35 states. Through his work, he has been able to visit all 50 states and 37 countries, with nights spent in too many hotel rooms to remember. He showed me a travel map that he kept in his planner, which folds out to be a map of the United States, peppered with a red dot for each city that he visited. At the same time, regrettably, he also told me that he never married precisely because of his job â€" he’s moving too fast to have a stable family. “I felt that I had found the perfect job for me, since it was my dream to see the world when I was growing up, but at what cost to my personal life?” he mused. 10. Finally, an incredible romance story came from a professor that I met on a flight from Tokyo to Chicago last year. I took the liberty of summarizing his story by a lot. “Believe it or not, I met my wife [who was sitting next to him] in an airport. We were delayed in Frankfurt after the airport was forced to close due to low visibility and snow, and it seemed like our flight back to the US seemed unlikely that morning. We were both pretty bored and was looking for someone to chat with, so we started talking and it pretty much clicked from the get-go, or as the expression goes. I was coming back from an academic conference and she was coming back from a business trip â€" but soon we realized that we had a lot in common. Well, to make a long story short, we ended up spending seven hours or so waiting for the weather to clear up â€" we went and got lunch, and some coffee afterwards. After returning to the States, we exchanged phone numbers, and soon began seeing each other on a regular basis. About a year later, we got married. Sometimes I ask myself what would have happened on that day if the flight never got delayed or if I haven’t just happened t o be sitting next to this particular lady. You know, at times, I still look back on all these years and everything seems too good to be true, just like what happens in movies â€" but wouldn’t you agree that the best movies are those that mirror human life?” I told my mom this story, and she plainly said, “You know, in real life, it’s near impossible to have a situation where you can’t do anything for seven hours except talk to a girl. He must have been really lucky.”

Summary of the questionnaire This survey was conducted in the above mentioned (in chapter 2) coffee shops taken as case studies and also by an online questionnaire regarding general ideas that usual coffee shop customers have. The summery of the questionnaire is as follows. Proximity The people (customers) who live in the same areas of a coffee shop seemed to visit them more regularly and regardless of the proximity some customers seem to visit the coffee shop they preferred the most even weekly. Majority of the customers also seemed to be visiting coffee shops occasionally. Behavior of customers Most of the customers in these coffee shops seem to be associating with at least one person and the individuals seemed to be visiting the coffee shop to do some particular work of study or other. In general, the majority of local customers are higher (more than 50%) than foreign customers in these coffee shops. Regular life and coffee shops When considering about the regular pattern of taking m eals, most customers donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t always take their breakfast, lunch or dinner at coffee shops. The minority of them has the habit of taking at least (mostly dinner) one meal from the coffee shops more frequently. Services and other facilities Most of the customers suggested that there should be more interior and parking facilities in these coffee shops. Some also claimed that the service and the quality of food should be improved. Personal opinion Regarding the personal opinion about coffee shops dispersal in Sri Lanka, most of the customers showed positive replies towards its further improvement in most other regions as well. As per the price of the products, most of the customers claimed that the price is expensive and the monopoly of the coffee shops should be controlled by its further developments. The social aspect of coffee shops Results from the coding and analysis of the interviews, survey data, and observations resulted in the emergence of six categories regarding the social aspect of the coffee shop. These themes include the opportunity to linger; ownership and territoriality; trust, respect and anonymity; productivity and opportunity to socialize and support. These themes are discussed in detail below. Opportunity to linger One obvious, but key element in the social atmosphere of the coffee shop is the opportunity to linger. Unlike a restaurant where a bill is presented at the end of a meal, once a beverage has been purchased in a coffee shop, the customers are typically welcome to stay as long as they like. The regulars who come in frequently, and linger, influence much of the social climate of the coffee shop. Although much of the motivation for lingering may be influenced by the attitude of the management, friendliness of the staff and patrons, and other social characteristics, there are physical characteristics that contribute to lingering behavior. Comfortable seating, seating that can easily be moved to accommodate conversations or groups, adequate lighting to read and communicate with others, and pleasant ambient conditions including acoustics, music, aroma, and views all contribute to lingering and length of time spent in the coffee shop. Feeling of ownership and territorialize The customers who participated in this study felt a sense of ownership, sometimes even to the point of entitlement, in the coffee shops they frequented. They had strong preferences for their chosen shop, opinions on how the shop should be run. In addition to the sense of ownership, these people also exhibited territorial feelings toward various areas within the coffee shop, such as a favorite seat or place at the bar. One definition of territoriality is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“the relationship between an individual or group and a particular setting that is characterized by a feeling of possessiveness and by attempts to control the appearance and use of spaceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ (Bower, 1980, p.180). During interviews, it was clarified that most of these customers had a favourite seat. To secure these favorite seats, territorial behavior was exhibited in all of the coffee shop through the use of body language as well as the placement of belongings. Customers marked their territories wit h books, backpacks, and other personal items to let others know they had claimed the seat. Trust, respect and anonymity When a climate of trust is established, people feel welcome and able to be themselves. That could be a motivation for selecting a regular coffee shop for any customer. Another intriguing aspect of the coffee shop is the opportunity for anonymity. The coffee shop is not home or the office, where roles and relationships are clearly established. The coffee shop allows people to start anew or to portray themselves as someone other than who they currently are. Productivity Many patrons responded that the coffee shop is a place they went if they wanted to feel productive. For many students, the coffee shop is an alternative to the library. During an interview with group of students in a private institute, they expressed a strong preference for the coffee shop over the library. They also stated that they have the ability to drink coffee, having group discussions, people-watch, take a break and have a conversation, listen to music, and just avoid what they perceived as a sterile library atmosphere. Mostly for professionals, the coffee shop was a place to meet for business or to get a particular task accomplished. Interviews revealed that working in the coffee shop often allowed these professionals to focus on a specific project without the distractions that would be found at home or the office. The coffee shops were also popular with teens doing homework or talking with friends. Causal conversations with the teens revealed they enjoy drinking coffee because it made them feel grown up, and gave them the opportunity to go somewhere other than a home to get together. They are out of the sight of parents and feel a greater sense of autonomy. Opportunity to socialize and support The underlying concept behind the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"social beings and familiar strangersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ is that a personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s presence in the coffee shop somehow validates or confirms their existence as a social member of the community. Many customers came to the coffee shops in groups, to meet friends, or spend lengthy time interacting with the staff. For them, the social atmosphere of the coffee shops was very important and they sought out conversation and interaction. For others, there was value in a daily routine that has a social component. Many designers feel responsible, when designing restaurants, bars, or coffee shops, for creating spaces that facilitate social interaction. However, although designing for sociability is important, designers should also note that findings from this study indicated that not all customers in the three coffee shops chose to interact, yet many received the benefits that one would expect from a social experience. For these patro ns, the outing to the coffee shop was more about being in the presence of familiar strangers and mostly being focused on their study or any particular home work. For many people, the coffee shop provides a place with a supportive group of acquaintances that enhances their overall well-being. Part of the social climate of the coffee shop is the support provided by the staff to other staff, the staff to the customers, and the customers to each other. Whether it is the opportunity for friendship formation and conversation, the ability to converse with someone in a similar situation or with a similar interest, or the opportunity to be alone in the company of others, the coffee shop can fill various needs for people. 1

Issues on Paying College Athletes Free Essays

For several years amateurism has posed a big controversy in college sports. Being a professional athlete is making the final cut, this is when athletes get paid for their talents for the use of entertainment. The athletes are given contracts due to their level of skill and performance. We will write a custom essay sample on Issues on Paying College Athletes or any similar topic only for you Order Now College is for students to get an education and prepare for a career. Most athletes attend college to get an education just in case they don†t make it to a professional sport level. College athleticism could be considered a stepping stone, it is a preparation stage for student athletes hoping to move on to the professional level. Many athletes attend college and play sports, but when they get to the professional level, they still aren†t capable of performing as well as expected. This is not the case with every athlete though, some of these young amateurs hit the professional league and explode and achieve beyond their expectations. Some of the collegiate athletes hit the professionals and perform better than experienced veterans. In the light of these facts, the question: â€Å"Should college players be paid? † is often posed. This question has been tossed around for a good number of years. It has probably been discussed since before college basketball players began to leave school early to become pro. As a college athlete I often feel that I deserve something extra, but every time I feel this way I always end up re-evaluating the situation. Once I†ve actually thought through the situation, I usually come to the conclusion that college athletes are already being paid. The education we receive and the experience of earning a college degree has no price value. This is the same thing South Florida coach Seth Greenberg stated when he was asked: â€Å"should college basketball players be paid? † in a series of questions asked by The Tampa Tribune (available at tampabayonline. net/final4/qa. htm). It is a fact that college athletes generate millions of dollars of revenue for universities, but despite the question, there are very important facts that are overlooked when it comes to discussing this issue. As I stated earlier, it is fact that college athletic programs produce a large sum of money. This money usually comes through television rights fees, bowl games, ticket sales and other means. In light of these facts, many believe that student athletes deserve more than just a scholarship or grant for their efforts. These facts could bring one to conclusion that the financial arrangements between universities and student-athletes are unfairly balanced in the favor of the college institutions. There are many hidden facts that explain the impossibilities to pay our student athletes. At Notre Dame, for example, grants-in-aid to student-athletes are worth about $5 million a annually. Add that to the millions of dollars spent on travel, housing, equipment, health care and several other cost and pretty soon, you are talking about big time money. So, while athletes generate millions of dollars for universities, there are also millions of dollars in expenses, most of which directly assist the student-athletes. Even at smaller colleges that do not generate as much money as the universities, the money generated through the sporting events usually invested in equipment and other necessities for the student-athletes. In other words, it is a two-way street, college athletes are well compensated, in other words well paid already. Without college most of America†s young athletes wouldn†t even get the exposure needed to make an impression on for the professional leagues. The system has been around and working for many years now, the thought of changing the rules to enable college athletes to be paid seems to me as a total act of greed. As stated by Mark (mla@Hoopnet. net) in an article found at www. mhoops. com: â€Å"the whole stinking show is rift of greed in my opinion. It is a fact that CBS forks over $3 billion, this is proof (in their minds) that they don†t need to change anything. I feel that if this money were cut, they would change things as quickly as possible. I see athletes being paid in college as a disadvantage, not only to the less wealthy schools who wouldn†t be able to afford the better players, but to the student/athletes as well. I feel that the colleges with the most money, and the wealthiest alumni†s will always have the very best teams in college sports if this happens, this will leave the less wealthy colleges with the bottom of the barrel players. How could you expect the less wealthy schools to ever win? How fair could this rule transition be? Paying players to attend a school is cheating them of the education they would have gotten better at another school to give them a better chance at winning a game of football, basketball, or what ever kind of sport they play. Sports are not promising, any athlete could have a career ending injury at anytime; however, the education they receive will always be able to open doors for them. Another reason why I feel that college athletes shouldn†t be paid is because it is too expensive. Many colleges are not on the best budget. Some barely make enough money to support their team sports. CBS college basketball analyst Bill Packer, in the same Tampa Tribune question series listed above states: â€Å"It†s a moot question (Should college athletes be paid? ). Under Title IX, what colleges do for one sport it has to do for all. Because of that, the funds aren†t available to pay students from each of a school†s athletic programs. Paying [basketball players] is thrown out a lot in discussion, but if people understood the process of Title IX, they would realize paying players would be an impossibility. This is something easily understandable, if colleges could afford this kind of money then they should be able to afford more and better scholarships. College is a place for education. Many people look at the money generated by college sports and start to imply that the athletes bringing this money in should benefit from it. These same people never seem to see that the college athletes already are. If these students were never given scholarships to attend these colleges then they probably wouldn†t be there. The same athletes you see playing the many different sports they play in college, would more than likely be playing these same sports back home in the neighborhood just for fun if they weren†t attending college. This makes you wonder: â€Å"why can†t they play sports in college without being paid? † there isn†t much of a difference. The opportunity to get an education should be enough, too many people get caught up in the money though. The world of sports has changed enormously because of greed. Professionalism is the level when athletes get paid. Paying college players would completely eliminate amateurism. That would make college players professional, but professionals are supposed to be the best of the best, the cream of the crop and all college athletes are not amongst the best: â€Å"so why should they be paid? † Under the article of Title IX, paying one player means paying them all, and paying one sport means paying all sports in an institution, since all collegiate athletes aren†t the best players it seems to be a waist of money. The idea of paying college athletes is very demeaning. Since it is a known fact that many athletes do not go to class, and stay involved in many mix-ups, the idea would only bring forth more comodity. I think paying college athletes would bring in more students who have no purpose in college besides playing sports. This would also affect the population at many schools. I also feel that this would be asking for more incidents and to occur. As many athletes get involved in violations at universities with partying, drinking, and drugs, one would think that these rates would rise with several students who have no intentions on becoming educated on campus. This matter could be stereotypical, but at the same time it is a fact that several athletes drop out, flunk out, or are kicked out of school. My position is to keep them out, and not paying college athletes is one of the major ways to do so. If college athletes begin to get paid everyone will want to attend and for many that would be the only reason. This is not what college is designed for. College is a task, an opportunity, not a job, but it will prepare you for one in the future, if you prove yourself there then you will be paid. The principle is that the only way to eliminate this question would be to pay the college athletes, but that would produce a great decline in the population of education. To perform a task such as; colleges would have to drop all â€Å"scholarship† college sports and allow colleges either to run Division III programs or own minor league teams where the players are paid (under some salary cap) but they wouldn†t need to be college students. That would bring forth the problem of distinguishing: getting the best students in a college and getting the best players. . I think that would take away from our society and economics, leaving us with fewer professionals. College athletes should not be paid, this would eliminate the sole purpose of attending college. Who would attend class. How to cite Issues on Paying College Athletes, Papers

Juran and Deming Essay Example

Juran and Deming Essay Juran and Deming W. Edwards Deming and Joseph M. Juran pursued their efforts and devoted their lives to helping organizations improve the quality of their products and services. Their impact is now worldwide and their accomplishments eminent. Deming and Juran’s amazing lives paralleled each other in many ways. As youths, both experienced hard times. However, they both overcame their humble beginnings, graduated from college, and embarked on their careers. Both Juran and Deming started off by working at Western Electric’s Hawthorne plant in Chicago, where they were influenced by the work of Walter Shewhart, a pioneer in statistical method. When World War II began, both men were active in the federal government’s wartime efforts. Employing his mathematician and statistician skills, Deming joined the Census Bureau and taught statistical methods to engineers and managers. Juran made marks by helping redesign critical supply processes in the Lend-Lease Administration. After the war, Deming and Juran’s work attained worldwide recognition, and both received an invitation to work in Japan from the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers. Deming taught Japanese engineers and top management statistical methods and how to view production as a system that included suppliers and consumers. Juran delivered lectures in Japan about managing for quality. The teachings of Deming and Juran were greatly appreciated by the Japanese: both men were presented medals by the Emperor of Japan as high awards for their assistance. Both developed well-received videotapes. Both founded institutes to help others continue to learn from their work. W. Edwards Deming, at 91, he continues to teach and consult Deming holds a Ph. D. in physics, but is a statistician by experience. He is an best known for leading Japanese businesses on the course that has made them leaders in quality and productivity throughout the world. In recognition of Deming, the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers established the Deming Prize. Joseph Juran has worked devotedly to establish his own institute, which provides education, training, and consulting in how to manage for quality. Juran holds degrees in electrical engineering and law. He is also well known in Japan for his contributions to the practice of total quality control. Deming does not define quality in a single phrase. He asserts that the customer can only define the quality of any product or service. Juran defines quality as fitness for use. He stresses a balance between product features and products free from deficiencies. Juran’s definition of quality reflects his strong orientation to meeting customer’s expectations. Deming considers that being within specifications is just the first step to continuous process improvement. He advocates reducing process variation on a continuing basis to improve quality. Deming also opposes the use of numerical goals and quotas to manage work. Deming takes a systems and leadership approach to quality. Concepts associated with his approach include: A. The System of Profound Knowledge B. The Plan–Do–Check–Act Cycle C. â€Å"Prevention by Process Improvement† D. The Chain Reaction for Quality Improvement E. Common Cause and Special Cause Variation F. The 14 Points; and G. The Deadly and Dreadful Diseases. Juran addresses quality–related goals and company–wide objectives, but more important to him is the deployment of goals throughout the organization. Strategic goals need to be deployed to all divisions and sections of the organization, and more specific goals need to be deployed to people so that they know what to do. Juran proposes a strategic and structured approach to achieve quality including: A. The Spiral of Progress in Quality B. The Breakthrough Sequence C. The Project–by–Project Approach D. The Juran Trilogy, and E. The principle of the Vital Few and Trivial Many. The two experts distinguish clearly between internal and external customers, and all support the practice of involving the suppliers in the quality effort. It is impossible to achieve quality when products or services provided by suppliers are inferior. These approaches also require the use of measurement and problem–solving techniques, but the emphasis on their use varies. Juran explained that measurement has to focus on the cost of quality. They use the reduction in cost as an indicator to meet customer requirements. Deming put more weight to the unknown costs (e. g. Impact from loosing a customer). He explained that measuring and meeting customer needs and expectations are major to implementing quality improvements. He emphasis more on quantitative methods and statistical methods rather than did his counterparts. Juran thought that Cost Of Poor Quality (COPQ) is the sum of all costs that would disappear if there were no quality problems. Quality improvement does not come free. On the other hand Deming expressed that companies should look at the total cost of product or service provided by others , and not just the purchase price. Accepting the lowest bid does not guarantee the lowest total cost. Deming focused on product improvement and service conformance by reducing uncertainty and manufacturing processes however Juran focused on frequency as a controlling factor : Plan , Do , Study , Act . If we observe Juran’s and Deming’s philosophy in suppliers roles . Deming favors the practice of working with a single supplier, where feasible, to reduce variability of incoming materials. To maintain long–term contracts, suppliers will be more likely to improve their own processes to provide better products or services. Juran recognize some of the advantages of single suppliers, but they take a more conservative view and simply advocate reducing the number of suppliers. Crosby and Juran consider it important to have different suppliers for the same product when the product is a critical one. The difference lies mainly in perspective. Deming’s perspective is customer-driven, Juran’s is more engineering-driven. In the end we can say that Deming was a philosopher who desired to provide a new way to view the world. Juran was a practitioner who desired to teach people better management practices. Because of their different approaches, Deming’s work tends to appeal to theoretical-minded individuals, whereas Juran’s tends to appeal to the practical-minded. Google Alerts

Google Alerts Google Alerts Google Alerts By Simon Kewin Most writers will have typed their name, or the title of something theyve written, into a search engine at some point. This can be a useful way of finding references to or reviews of your work that you didnt know about. Google Alerts is an invaluable (and free) system for automating this process. Using it, you can set up the search terms youre interested in : your name, say, or the title of your novel, short story, poem or article. Google will then automatically email you if it finds any new references to the terms youve provided. As well as keeping tabs on your own works, you could use the system in numerous other ways: for updates on a favourite writer, for example, or on an agent you are interested in contacting. Or you could use it to find updates on a particular period or location you are researching for a novel. The system gives you some control over which web sites it will check on your behalf. For example, you can tell it just to look at blog posts, or videos, or simply to look everywhere. You can also specify how frequently alerts are to be sent to you: daily, weekly, or as they are discovered. The success with which the system works depends very much on the search terms you use. If you provide a commonly-used term, youll probably get lots of false positives. A more distinctive term the exact title of a novel say will work better. The web site for setting up these alerts is here. The system lets you set up as many as you like (up to a maximum of 1000), although note that you do have to register with Google to use the system. How Velociraptor Was Discovered

How Velociraptor Was Discovered Of all the dinosaurs that have been discovered over the last 200 years, Velociraptor comes closest to the romantic ideal of rugged paleontologists trekking across dangerous, windswept terrain in search of ancient fossils. Ironically, though, this dinosaur was nowhere near as smart and vicious as it has subsequently been depicted in movies, the main culprit being Jurassic Parks pack-hunting, quick-thinking, doorknob-turning Velociraptors (which were actually played by individuals of the closely related raptor genus Deinonychus, and even then not all that accurately). The Velociraptors of the Gobi Desert In the early 1920s, Mongolia (located in central Asia) was one of the most remote places on the face of the earth, inaccessible by train, plane, or pretty much anything else except a well-stocked caravan of well-oiled automobiles and sturdy horses. That is exactly what New Yorks American Museum of Natural History dispatched to outer Mongolia, by way of western China, in a series of fossil-hunting expeditions led by the famous paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews. Although Andrews personally discovered and named many Mongolian dinosaurs in the early 1920s- including Oviraptor and Protoceratops- the honor of unearthing Velociraptor went to one of his associates, Peter Kaisen, who stumbled upon a crushed skull and toe claw at a dig site in the Gobi Desert. Unfortunately for Kaisen, the honor of naming Velociraptor didnt go to him, or even to Andrews, but to Henry Fairfield Osborn, the president of the American Museum of Natural History (who, after all, wrote all the checks). Osborn referred to this dinosaur as Ovoraptor in a popular magazine article; fortunately for generations of schoolkids (can you imagine having to distinguish between Ovoraptor and Oviraptor?) he settled on Velociraptor mongoliensis (speedy thief from Mongolia) for his scientific paper. Velociraptor Behind the Iron Curtain It was difficult enough to send an American expedition to the Gobi Desert in the early 1920s; that became a political impossibility only a few years later, as the Mongolian government was toppled by a Communist revolution and the Soviet Union exerted its hegemony over Mongolian science. (The Peoples Republic of China didnt come into existence until 1949, giving the USSR a crucial head start in a Mongolian nation that, today, is dominated by China rather than Russia.) The upshot was that, for over 50 years, the American Museum of Natural History was excluded from any further Velociraptor-hunting expeditions. After World War II, Mongolian scientists, aided by colleagues from the USSR and Poland, returned repeatedly to the Flaming Cliffs fossil site where the original Velociraptor specimens had been unearthed. The most famous discovery- of a near-complete Velociraptor caught in the act of grappling with an equally well-preserved Protoceratops- was announced in 1971. In the late 1980s, following the crumbling of the Soviet Union and its satellites, western scientists were again able to travel in Mongolia. This was when a joint Chinese and Canadian team discovered Velociraptor specimens in northern China, and a joint Mongolian and American team unearthed additional Velociraptors at the Flaming Cliffs site. (One of the specimens discovered on this latter expedition was informally named Ichabodcraniosaurus, after Nathaniel Hawthornes headless horseman because it was missing its skull.) Later, in 2007, paleontologists discovered a Velociraptor forearm bearing the unmistakable imprint of quills- the first definite proof that (as had long been suspected) Velociraptor sported feathers rather than reptilian scales. The Feathered Theropods of Central Asia As famous as it is, Velociraptor was far from the only feathered, meat-eating dinosaur of late Cretaceous central Asia. The ground was thick with dino-birds closely related to the North American Troodon, including Saurornithoides, Linhevenator, Byronosaurus, and the wonderfully named Zanabazar; feathered dinosaurs closely related to Oviraptor, including Heyuannia, Citipati, Conchoraptor, and the (also) wonderfully named Khaan; and a vast assortment of associated raptors. Most of these dinosaurs were discovered in the late 20th century, under the auspices of a talented generation of Chinese paleontologists. What was it about the windswept Mongolian plains that favored this brand of dinosaur diversity? Clearly, conditions in late Cretaceous central Asia  favored small, skittery animals that could nimbly pursue smaller prey or speedily escape from the clutches of slightly bigger dino-birds. In fact, the profusion of central Asian feathered dinosaurs points to the most likely explanation for the evolution of flight: originally evolved for the purposes of insulation and display, feathers gave dinosaurs a certain amount of lift while they were running, and were thus increasingly favored by natural selection until one lucky reptile achieved actual lift-off!

Impact of Technology on Society (Automobile) Essay

Impact of Technology on Society (Automobile) - Essay Example The automobile technology has had far reaching effects on the society. The advent of technology in the field of automobile has led to the design and production of high quality features of the automobiles used in the industry. The technological progress in the field of automobile has led to development in the cooling systems of engines, increased fuel efficiency of cars, advanced suspension and emission systems, increased horse-power, etc (Volti, 2004). The use of technologies has however, impacted the society by bringing about changes in the socio-economic lives of the people and also affecting the environmental conditions. Functions of society prior to use of technology The functions of the society prior to the invention and use of technology was primitive in nature. The people of the society were accustomed to undertake huge efforts in doing works like gathering of food, travelling from one place to another, sending messages for communication. The works of the society were done over longer period of time. The wooden chariots pulled by animals like horses, cows, buffaloes, etc. was used for moving from one place to another. The poorer sections of the society even had to walk long distances for the purpose of travelling from one place to another. There were several limitations in the modes of transport and long distance travel was done only cases of high need. The people of the society depended on the natural resources and the animals for maintaining their livelihood. The functions of the society before the use of technology was highly dependent on the natural and the natural resources were worshipped as Gods and Goddesses for securing their liveliho od. The functions of the society changed as they learnt to convert the natural resources into beneficial elements for their use that would help to lead to attain improvement in the style of livelihood. The invention of the wheel, motor, steam engine and mechanical engines gradually changes the function of the society as they could achieve their goals with much lesser efforts than before. Functions of the society after adoption of technology The functions of the society changed drastically with the adoption of technologies. The discovery and application of technology increased the efficiency of several modes of communication and transport. The use of automobiles in the society that incorporate complicates and sophisticated technologies were able to provide faster and smoother ways of communication all over the world. The people of the society could travel longer distances with the help of fuel efficient and high horse-power driven automobile engine used in cars and aircrafts. The bar riers of communication were reduced and people could not travel farther distances within their national boundaries but could also cross international borders with ease. The reduction of these barriers with the wide-spread adoption of technology helped in fostering social and cultural exchange between the nations. The various meeting and conferences held across the world from people of society in different corners of the globe were part of daily routines. This brought about economic changes in the lives of the people as the increase in business activities with the spread of technology and world-wide exchanges of culture, ideas and businesses led to the advent of globalization which reshaped the functions of the

The adherence of men with CHD to the medical regimen Research Paper

The adherence of men with CHD to the medical regimen - Research Paper Example This paper illustrates that evaluating organizational culture and its readiness often takes a multi-dimensional approach as displayed by the results discussed hereafter. Basically, the investigation focused on not only looking into organizational culture but also going a step further and evaluating barriers that could possibly impede implementation of projects. These included commitment of nursing staff, physicians, and the administration to Evidence Based Practice (EBP). Additionally, evaluated is the extent to which a critical mass of nurses with strong EBP and skills scored, alongside the extent to which staff nurses have proficient computer skills. Interestingly, the scores rated from mid-range to high. Such scores are important in implementations aimed at integrating clinical inquiry into initiatives aimed at achieving organizational efficiency. It is important to mention that clinical inquiry requires a sequential and sophisticated approach and hence the findings of the study a re critical to successful implementation. Physician commitments to EBP score and the extent to which a critical mass of nurses with strong EPB and skills scored were relatively high. This does not fall short of expectations given that physicians receive more specialized training and the same can be said about nurses with strong EBP and skills. Administration commitment to EBP indirectly impacts on EBP, which makes organizational culture and efficiency very crucial to successful implementation of EBP.... The score recorded is relatively high (4) although not maximal. This can be attributed to training and adequate commitment towards implementation of the same. Similarly, nursing staff commitment to EBP and the extent to which staff nurses bear proficiency in computer skills scored relatively low at 3. This can mainly be linked to nurse’s attitude towards implementation of the same as well as their disinterest in gaining computer skills training. Therefore, improvement in this area tops the list of approaches that can help in incorporation of clinical inquiry into day-to-day

The Ethnic Malay Malaysian Nationalism History Essay

The Ethnic Malay Malaysian Nationalism History Essay This phenomena is an example of the social transformation happening right now in Malaysia due to the unequal treatment among the ethnic groups. Malaysia is a multi-cultural nation. The Malays, Chinese and Indians build up the population. However, since the independence of Malaysia, racist policies have been marginalizing the minorities. In this essay, I am going to talk about racist Malay Malaysian Nationalism by tracing the history of formation and development of this country. Multi-cultural Malaysia Malaysia, formerly known as Malaya, located on the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo in the Southeast Asia. It has been a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country since its independence in 1957 from the British Occupation. It has a population of 28.8 million consists of the three major ethnic groups: the Malays (61.4%), Chinese (23.7%), Indians (7.1%). (Mose 2010: 285-297). The immigration of the Indians into the Malaya Peninsula is encouraged by the British colonial government in the 19th century. It reached its peak during the rapid expansion of the rubber plantation in 1910s. The Chinese started flushing in since the 19th century to escape from the unstable society in China and seek for better economic opportunities. They made up the main labor force of the tin mining industry until the early 20th century. Whereas, the Malays have started to move into the Malaya Peninsula earlier than during the 14th century from the islands which are known as Indonesian territories today. However, the Malays consider themselves as Bumiputra (sons of the soil) of Malay Peninsula and categorize themselves as the indigenous population. (Saw 2007). The ethnic tensions have been the biggest internal problem of the nation. Several elements have led to the emergence and affirmation of the ethnic Malay Malaysian Nationalism. The Ethnic Malay Malaysian Nationalism How do Malaysians define themselves in terms of nationality and culture? Is that possible to emerge a Malaysian Nationalism purely clean of the racism? In the book Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism, Anderson Benedict (2006) defines nation as an imagined political community. Communities are imagined. It is imagined because the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion. Hence, communities are to be distinguished, not by their falsity/genuineness, but by the style in which they are imagined. It is imagined as a community, because, regardless of the actual inequality and exploitation that may prevail in each, the nation is always conceived as a deep, horizontal comradeship. Ultimately it is this fraternity that makes it possible, over the past two centuries, for so many millions of people, not so much to kill, as willingly to die for such limited imaginings. That seems to be a flawless condition that will lead to the stability and peacefulness of a country. The Malaysian Nationalism should be distinguished, not by the skin colour, but the vision to the prosperity of the country shared by the members. However, the civilization of this region since its occupation by colonial power has had a great impact on the way they imagine of the community. Ethnic groups have emerged diversified nationalism as a result of the marginalization by the former colonial governments. Before British colonial occupation was established in the late nineteenth century on the Malayan Peninsula, Malays originated from Indonesia had controlled the underpopulated areas and defined territorial units which resided by Sultan (the rulers). During the early 1800s, the British colonial government opened the doors to the Chinese immigrants when the growing tin mining industry was greatly in need of labor. For a more handy decentralized administration, the British colonial government collaborated with the Malay rulers in each region. The regions were governed under the Malay rulers with the advice by the British agents in return of a certain legal protection. This protection was to ensure the superiority of Malay traditional culture over the increasing population of other ethnic groups as well as the survival of their agricultural economy under the rapid developing modern export economy in the non-Malay and European-populated urban areas. (Mauzy 2006) The British intervention has been intrusive to the development of the ethnic relations. The status and privileges of Malay has been affirmed, thus a new nationalism has been arisen among the Malay community. According to Roffs classic analysis, organised Islamic fervour during the early 1900s, a secular, but still traditional resistance waged by privileged aristocrats beginning in the late 1920s, and a surge in Malay radicalism during the 1930s. (Roff, 1974) Japanese occupation has made exacerbated the existing ethnic tension by the extremely brutal treatment to the Chinese. Before Japanese landed on the Malay Peninsula, Malaysian Chinese has been resented by the renowned Nanking Massacre which killed approximately 250,000 to 300,000 Chinese in 1937 in China. (Rummel, 2002) During the invasion of Malay Peninsula, Japanese treated Malaysian Chinese exceptionally harshly to undermine the funding support to the resistance in China. Being in a tough situation, the Chinese had had the most members in the resistance groups. In contrast, Japanese occupation encouraged the Malay nationalism by reaffirming their identity of Bumiputra, the superiority of Malay of then region. (bin Zakaria 1989) Malays were also promoted in the bureaucracy and new paramilitary formation. (Case 2000) With the defeat of Japan and the return of the British colonial government, Chinese had acquired a new stature as guerrilla heroes. Accordingly, it could be expected that the Malays, the bumiputra, would demand for an affirmation of its dominance on the region. The racism attached to the Malay Nationalism was clearer at this point. Racism, which is directed against a population regarded as a minority, is defined as internal racism. According to Balibar (1988), it is useful to characterize certain racist posture as auto-referential (those in which the bearers of the prejudice, exercising physical or symbolic violence, designate themselves as representatives of a superior race). Nationalism and racism are conceptually separated to each other. However, there are sound evidences showing that these two ideologies are highly related. Strong elements of racism can be pointed out in, at least, some forms of nationalism. According to Etienne Balibar (1991), racism is always implied in the nationalist movements. When people in a nation share the same language, skin color, the sense of nationalism is often overlapped with racism. During the early independence, Malays was discontented with the uneven distribution of income among the ethnic groups as a result of the division of occupations. (the domination of Malays in agriculture, whereas the Chinese in commerce activities) Chinese accumulated considerable wealth due to the rapid expansion of the commerce activities. The income gap between the Chinese and the Malays was significant. In 1970, the Chinese has a mean income of RM467.50 while Malay has a mean income of only RM313.20. (Ikemoto 1985: 347-367) In 1969, Chinese dominated political party made a significant gain in opposition to the Malay controlled party in the general election.   On May 13, right after the result of the election was released, when members of the winning party marched through some largely Malay areas, the riot broke out. The Malays and the Chinese killed each other. May 13 incident was the most dismaying racial riot happened in the history of Malaysia. It has become the turning point of the racial relation where the implementation of the racist policies started. (Gray 2007) Calling for addressing the root of the conflict, the New Economic Policy started in the 1971 under Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak, who is from UMNO, the main Malay political party. In fact, the policies and regulations of NEP were, in some senses, reaffirming the Malay superiority over other races. It has affected not only Malaysian economy but also education and the social structure. (Koon 1997: 262-292) NEP is indeed the product of the new Malay Malaysian Nationalism. The ambitious but controversial New Economic Policy (NEP) was launched in 1971 with two main objectives: to eradicate the poverty and to correct the economic imbalances among the ethnic groups. This set of policies has completely traumatized the Chinese and Indian communities. Since its implementation, criticism was overthrown. It has been accused of affirming the Malay Supremacy by reducing the status of the non-Malay citizens. The NEP ended in 1991 but most of the tangible economic privileges it reserved for the Malays are still ongoing until now. The education policy in the New Economic Policy has had the greatest impact on the social structure of the country. One phase to social and economic transformation of the Malays is only through education, not equity participation. You take care of education and they will have enough to participate in the capital market, former Finance Minister of Malaysia, Tun Daim Zainuddin justified the priority granted for the Malays in his speech on the Issues Facing the Malays. (Caballero-Anthony 2006) The policy was aimed at creating more opportunities for higher education through admission policy for the Malays and indigenous residents. However, while they are guaranteed high-quality education the educational opportunity for non-Malay citizens are brutally and radically reduced. For the past 30 years, Malaysia has been the only Asian country that officially discriminates against a certain group of citizens in matters of education. In 1962, the enrolment to the University of Malaya by ethnicity was   60% Chinese, 20% Malay and 20% Indians and Others. The ethnic quota system of 55:45 in favor of the Malays and indigenous residents was established as part of NEP in 1971. In the same year, the participation rate of Malay students was already equal to that of Chinese students at about 44%. (Mukherjee 2000) In fact, most of the other public university admitted more Malay students than the specified quota of 55%. The criteria for the entrance of local public university is also the main obstacle to the non-Malay students. Matriculation program and Malaysian High Certificate of Education (STPM) are the two ways of entering the public university after the high school education. Whereas, matriculation program reserves around 90% of the places for the Malays and indigenous residents. (Lee 2005) In addition, by examining the grading system, it is relatively an easier way for student to be admitted to the local public uni versity. As a result, Malay students are advantaged and non-Malay students are discouraged. Many non-malay students instead choose to study abroad. This has led to a significant outflow of human capital, especially elites, because students often settle down for the rest of their life after their studies. Another racist part of the New Economic Policy is the housing quota system. To encourage more Malays and indigenous residents to own property, housing policy requires the Malaysian housing developers to set aside at least 30% of their development housing for Malays as well as provide a discount of 5-15%. After 30 years of the implementation of the policy, lots reserved are often released to the open market upon the approval by the State government. (Real Estate and Housing Developers Association Malaysia 2012) It has resulted in increasing of property ownership by the Malays but also the economic inefficiency. New Economic Policy favors Malays economic opportunities by the quota system of ownership. What has had the greatest impact on the Chinese business community is the target of NEP of increasing Malays share of economic ownership from 2.4% (in 1969) to 30% to achieve a 30:40:30 welfare ratio of Bumiputra, other Malaysian, and foreign ownership within a 20-year time frame. (Leong 1992) Such an intensive redistribution of wealth has been hastened by the legislature restriction. In contrast, no official assistance was offered to non-Bumiputra to achieve the goal of acquiring 40% of the national wealth. It has hugely reduced the incentive for the Chinese in their business activities. Conclusion Yet, most of the criticisms are based on the issue that the non-Malays under the poverty line are not benefitted by the NEP called for eradicating poverty. Robert Kuok Hock Nien, Malaysian Chinese, once the richest person in the South East Asia, started focusing his investment overseas by reducing its portion in Malaysia after a series of new business restrictions favoring the Malays been implemented. ** There are Chinese under poverty line but the government did not address them. *** People are qualified for the benefit according to their race, instead of their economic position. Conclusion.

Therapeutic Techniques

THEORY AND PRACTICE OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY Gerald Corey Section 5 APPLICATION: THERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES The redecision therapy model of the Gouldings (1979) is grounded within the framework of TA theory, yet their methods are a combination of TA, Gestalt therapy, interactive group therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, family therapy, and psychodrama. Realizing the importance of combining the affective and the cognitive dimensions, the Gouldings draw heavily from TA heory for cognitive structure, and they use Gestalt techniques to provide the emotional work that breaks through the impasses clients often experience. Following is a brief description of some of the more commonly used processes, procedures, and techniques in TA practice. Most of them can be applied to both individual and group counseling. Therapeutic Procedures Structural analysis Structural analysis is a tool by which a person becomes aware of the content and functioning of his or her Parent, Adult, and Child.TA clients learn how to identify their own ego states. Structural analysis helps them resolve patterns that they feel stuck with. It allows them to find out which ego state their behavior is based on. With that knowledge they can determine their options. Transactional Analysis Two problems related to the structure of personality can be considered by structural analysis: contamination and exclusion. Contamination exists when the contents of one ego state are mixed with those of another. For example, the Parent, the Child, or both may intrude within the oundaries of the Adult ego state and interfere with the clear thinking and functioning of the Adult. (Figure 1). Contamination from the Parent is typically manifested through prejudiced ideas and attitudes; contamination from the Child involves distorted perceptions of reality. When contamination of the Adult by the Parent, the Child, or both exists, â€Å"boundary work† is called for so that the demarcation of each eg o state can be clearly drawn. When the ego-state boundaries are realigned, he person understands his or her Child and Parent rather than being contaminated by them. Here are some statements reflecting contamination from the Parent: â€Å"Don’t mix with people who are not of our kind†; â€Å"Never trust Italians†; â€Å"Watch out for mechanics; they’ll cheat you every time†; â€Å"You can’t depend on teenagers. † The following statements reflect contamination from the Child: â€Å"Everyone’s always picking on me. Nobody treats me right†; â€Å"Anything I want I should get right now†; â€Å"Who could possibly ever want to be my friend? †
